Eggroll QueenMai Vang The Eggroll Queen Story Back in late 2013, I went deaf and everything I knew how quickly came to and end. I have tried everything ranging from traditional herbal to western treatments, spiritual healing, etc, but nothing seemed to help. The doctor told me there there’s a 5% of deaf people nationwide that they don’t know how to help because there’s no root cause for the deafness. When I finally came to accept that my hearing loss could be permanent, my life was devastated and I don’t even know how I was going to move forward. Started From My Kitchen With the number of community members and friends pouring in to support and requesting more and more of the egg rolls, I realized I have something to help me cope with my problem and yet still be able to contribute my my community. We didn’t have equipment to make the egg rolls so I started flying egg rolls on aluminum pan from my kitchen. My living room was filled with friends and community members that I have never met before. People were kindly waited in the small living room while I slowly cooked those egg rolls. On days where I don’t sell egg rolls, I would host egg rolls sessions in my living room for those who were interested to learn how to make the delicious egg rolls and the place was packed. It was exhausting, but everyone loved and went home with a smile. Food Trailer - Food Truck One day, I could no longer fried that many egg rolls from my living room so my brother, Cherxa Vang, build me a trailer, funded by friends and the community. The trailer was a great success and I was able to fry enough egg rolls with a commercial fryer and share them with the community. On one cold January day while we were doing a fundraiser to help a grandma that passed away, my trailer caught on fire and it was beyond repairable. The community once again donated enough for me to get a food truck so I can continue to share the delicious jumbo egg rolls. Business Challenges With the Eggroll Queen food truck, I was able to share my egg rolls anywhere I go and it was a great improvement from the trailer; however, with that much egg rolls going out everyday, I cannot prep them in the food truck. I needed a commercial place to prep and store my ingredients. I would work late into the night and renting someone’s kitchen means I have to stop when they stop. It was very inconvenient to operate the food truck. In addition, everyone also wanted the egg rolls throughout the year, not just the summer time. To make sure everyone get their delicious egg rolls in the cold months, I would do a once-a-month egg rolls sells where I would fried egg rolls all day for them. It gives me the unique opportunity to introduce my delicious egg rolls to a larger community because most of them have never had a GOOD egg rolls or don’t really know how an egg roll should really taste like. They always settle with the down-graded version from some other places. Woman of Color Being a woman of color, to a grow a business, it’s really challenging especially in our community. As a Hmong woman, you normally don’t just go out there and start approaching potential investors with your business ideas. Besides, almost every family in the Hmong community knows how to make their egg rolls. Finding the financial to start a business was truly the biggest hurdle because I didn’t really have anything to begin with, and with my disability, my family income was cut in half. We continue to operate with what we have and everyone was very supportive of the giant egg rolls. Dr. David Schultz and Helene Schultz were one of the many customers who love our egg rolls. Dr. Schultz had mentioned to me that if I ever need any sort of financial support to make the Eggroll Queen better, he would love to help me. We finally reached out to them, formed our business, and started the Eggroll Queen Music Café. Eggroll Queen Music Cafe Now that I have a commercial kitchen to work with, I am able to offer other egg roll types such as breakfast, steak, cheesy chicken, taco, pizza, desserts and rice bowl dish such as honey beef, pork ginger, chicken teriyaki, sweet & spicy chicken. I also love to surprise our customers with unique egg rolls through out the months. Our hope is to share our jumbo egg rolls everywhere and continue to support our local community where needed.
